October 2017
Dear Parents/Guardian
We are nearly at the end of the first half-term for 2017-2018. I hope that you feel that your child has settled well into their new class.
Working Together on a Key Area for the School: Reading
Reading is at the core of the curriculum and it is an area that we, as a school need to work on – particularly as the standard expected is now much higher. Our first consultation evening is to discuss reading in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 on Wednesday 18th October 3.30-6.00pm.
It is vital that children read for half an hour minimum for a least three times a week. In view of this a new homework approach will be taken from after half-term so that pupils concentrate on the basics – reading, learning tables and spelling with a termly ‘challenge’ to enthuse and extend pupils! (letter to follow).
Understanding Reading and How To Help Your Child
I have also organised some ‘Understanding Reading’ sessions for parents, to be run by a consultant in Primary School Reading. There will be two meetings in the first instance – one for Year 3 and 4 and another for Years 5 & 6. They will clearly explain the role of parents and will give practical help. Both meetings will show the expectation for Year 6 in national tests. The meetings will be on Friday 3rd November for Year 5 and 6 at 9.30am (after family assembly) up to one hour Friday 3rd November at 2.30pm for Years 3 and 4. (Please fill in the slip overleaf. Sessions are free of charge)
Family Assembly
From half-term family assembly will be every 2 weeks and not weekly as follows:-
Friday 3rd November: No Family Assembly: Reading Meetings.
Friday 10th November: Open Morning 9.15am – 11am.

Yours sincerely
